The Great festival of "Shivaratri" is close and it is an occasion to discuss Shiva prayers. The ultimate Shiva mantra is "Aum Namah Shivay" and a famous Sanskrit Prayer "Shiva Panchakshari Stotra" is there with five stanzas - Each stanza starting with five letters of this mantra - Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya. Since each mantra starts with "Aum", this mantra including "Aum" has six letters which in Sanskrit is "Shada Akshar". Similar to "Shiva Panchakshari Stotra" there has been written a "Shiva Shadakshar Stotra" with six stanzas, each starting with these six letters. Though it is not so popular its meaning and emotions are great and once you know it you will like to remember it and maybe you like to pray God Shiva with it. I am writing it with meaning:--
"ॐ नमः शिवाय" -- "Aum Namah Shivay"
शिव षड़क्षर स्तोत्र (Shiva_Shadakahar_Stotra)
ॐकारम् बिंदु संयुक्तम् नित्यम् ध्यायन्ति योगिनः
कामदं मोक्षदं चैव ॐकराय नमो नमः ।। १ । ।
"Aumkaram bindu sanyuktam nityam dhyayanti yoginah
Kamdam Mokshadam chaiva Aunkaraya namo namah "
(ॐ) - The Aum with a point which is brought in "dhyana" by yogis, I pray to that god in the form of "Aum" who gives what is desired by the devotee and also gives "moksha" if desired.
नमन्ति ऋषियो देवा नमन्ति अप्सरसां गणाः
नरा नमन्ति देवेशं नकाराय नमो नमः ।। २ । ।
"Namanti rishiyo deva namanti apsarsan ganah
Nara namanti devesham nakaraya namo namah"
(न) - I pray to that God of gods in the form of "Na", before whom bow "Rishis", gods, "Apsaras", 'Ganas" and humans.
महादेवं महात्मानं महाध्यान परायणम्
महापाप हरं देवम् मकाराय नमो नमः ।। ३ । ।
"Mahadevam mahatmanam Mahadhyan parayanam
Mahapap haram devam makaraya namo namah"
(म) - I pray to that God in the form of "Ma" who is "Maha-deva", Supreme god, remains in "Dhyana" and destroys sins.
शिवम् शान्तं जगन्नाथं लोकानुग्रहकारकं
शिवमेकपदं नित्यं शिकाराय नमो नमः ।। ४ । ।
"Shivam shantam jagannatham lokanugrah-kaarakam
Shivamek-padam nityam shikaraya namo namah"
(शि) - Shiva who is cool and calm, master of the universe, and kind to people, I bow daily only in those feet of God who is in the form of "Shi".
वाहनं ऋषभो यस्य वासुकि: कंठ भूषणं
वामे शक्तिधरं देवं वाकाराय नमो नमः ।। ५ । ।
"Vahanam rishavo yasya Vasukih kanth bhushanam
Vame shakti-dharam devam Vakaraya namo namah"
(वा) - I pray to that God in the form of "Va", whose vehicle is bull, whose neck is adorned by great snake 'Vasuki' and who has Goddess of power on his left.
यत्र यत्र स्थितो देवः सर्वव्यापी महेश्वरः
यो गुरुः सर्व देवानां यकाराय नमो नमः ।। ६ । ।
"Yatra yatra sthito devah sarva-vyapi Maheshwarah
Yo guruh sarva devanam Yakaraya namo namah"
(य) - I pray to that God in the form of "Ya", who is guru of all gods and wherever that omnipresent great God is.
षडक्षर स्तोत्रमिदम् य: पठे: शिव सन्निद्धं
शिवलोकं वाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते ।।ॐ।।
"Shadakshar stotra-midam yah pathe Shiva-sannidham
Shiva-lokam vapnoti Shiven sah modate" ||Aum||
(Whosoever reads this six-lettered stotram near Shiva, he gets to the world of Shiva and gets enjoyment and happiness with Shiva.)
